Welcome to the Academy of Hospitality, Marketing, and Business. Our academy strives to prepare high school students to excel in college and compete in global workforce within hospitality, marketing, and business professions. In addition, students in the Academy of Hospitality, Marketing, and Business will have the opportunity to participate in experiential learning several times a year to establish a meaningful connection between what they are learning in school and its application beyond the classroom. They will also be provided the opportunity to obtain industry certifications and college credit. This pathway is designed to prepare students who want to start, own, and operate their own business. The purpose of the Entrepreneurship program of studies is to help young innovators at the secondary level begin to develop and equip themselves with the practical skills and knowledge needed to successfully launch and maintain small businesses as entrepreneurs.
National Career Cluster Alignment
The Entrepreneurship Pathway is a part of the Marketing, Distribution, and Logistics career cluster. The Marketing Cluster involves planning, managing, and performing marketing and sales activities to reach an organization’s objectives.
Pathway Courses
Level 1 Course: Introduction to Entrepreneurship
- In this course, students will develop strong foundational knowledge in key business and entrepreneurial principles, including types of business ownership management functions and styles, human resources, business operations, marketing, finance and budgeting, employment law, and ethics. Students will also develop skills in critical thinking, communication, and professionalism by exploring key aspects of leadership, the entrepreneurial mindset, diversity, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Upon completion of this course, students will be proficient in the foundations of entrepreneurship and small business ownership, business concepts and operations, finance and budgeting, marketing principles, leadership and management functions, and professional communications.
- Aligned Industry Credential: Microsoft Office Specialist - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook. Pass an exam in a specific Office program (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook) to earn a Microsoft Office Specialist certification. Being certified as a Microsoft Office Specialist demonstrates a student has the skills needed to get the most out of Office.
Level 2 Course: Marketing and Management I: Principles
- Marketing and Management I: Principles focuses on the study of marketing concepts and their practical applications. Students will examine the risks and challenges that marketers face to establish a competitive edge in the sale of products and services. Topics covered include foundational marketing functions such as promotion, distribution, and selling, as well as coverage of economics fundamentals, international marketing, and career development. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will understand the economic principles, the marketing mix, and product development and selling strategies.
- Aligned Industry Credential: Southwest Airlines Professional Communications Certification. The Southwest Airlines Professional Communication Certification focuses on how to communicate effectively in the workplace by addressing topics, including time management, written and verbal communication, listening skills, and effectively managing diversity in the workplace.
Level 3 Course: Entrepreneurship
- Entrepreneurship is an applied knowledge course that begins with the discovery process of generating new business ideas. Students research local, national, and international social and economic trends and analyze the feasibility of their own proposed businesses, both from a market demand and revenue-producing standpoint. Based on their entrepreneurial endeavors, students will prepare, write, and revise a business plan. In preparation for the business plan, students will conduct market research, study ownership structures, evaluate risks, examine startup costs, determine essential vendors, and identify sources of capital and financing options. Students will also draft, refine, and rehearse entrepreneurship pitches developed from their business plans to present during course intervals and to give final presentations at the conclusion of the course. Upon conclusion of this course, proficient students will be able to articulate, and defend, elements of a full business plan for a new business.

The Southwest Airlines Professional Communication Certification focuses on how to communicate effectively in the workplace by addressing topics, including time management, written and verbal communication, listening skills, and effectively managing diversity in the workplace.
Dual Credit and/or Dual Enrollment Opportunity in this Pathway

- Institution: NSCC - Nashville State Community College
- Dual Credit- Credit by assessment. Students are enrolled in a high school course that is identified as a match with a post-secondary course. Students complete a college assessment at the end of the course to prove mastery of content. If the student passes the test, the student can use the college credit at that institution or request a transcript to use at a different institution.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.
Potential Careers

Hospitality and Tourism Management
This pathway focuses on the skills and knowledge needed for careers within the hospitality industry, including hotel management, customer service, and travel advising. In this program 10 of study, students investigate the impact of the hospitality industry on the local and global economy, marketing foundations and functions, and human resource management.

The Hospitality and Tourism Management Pathway is a part of the Hospitality & Tourism career cluster. The Hospitality & Tourism Career Cluster covers the management, marketing, and operations of restaurants, hotels, attractions, recreation events, and travel services.

Level 1 Course: Hospitality & Tourism II
- Hospitality and Tourism Management II builds on the foundational course and an intermediate course for students interested in learning more about careers in the hospitality and tourism industry. This course covers multiple topics preparing students for the hospitality and tourism industry with the skills and knowledge in management, human resources, recruitment, career development, marketing, finances, economics, and customer services. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to pursue more advanced coursework in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program of study.

The Southwest Airlines Professional Communication Certification focuses on how to communicate effectively in the workplace by addressing topics, including time management, written and verbal communication, listening skills, and effectively managing diversity in the workplace.
Level 2 Course: Hospitality & Tourism III
- Hospitality and Tourism Management III is an advanced course intended to further build on the knowledge and skills from previous courses and preparing students for a variety careers in the hospitality and tourism industry. This course covers multiple topics in employability and professionalism, international and global hospitality and tourism, legislation and governing laws, crisis preparedness and emergency procedures, marketing and selling, and financial applications. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will be able to pursue more advanced coursework in the Hospitality and Tourism Management program of study.

Level 3 Course: Event Planning and Management
- Event Planning & Management is designed to be a project-based, capstone experience in which students’ research, prepare, deliver, and reflect upon an original event for a community organization, business, or non-profit. Upon completion of this course, proficient students will further refine leadership, teamwork, and management skills acquired in previous courses and apply them through application in a practicum setting. The course is highly customizable to meet local needs: partner organizations may be chosen at the discretion of student teams, with the approval of the instructor and appropriate school personnel. Organizations can include local nonprofits, charities, shelters, agencies, businesses, sports teams, school-based enterprises, or other entities with a demonstrated need for assistance in staging an event or a commitment to providing students with work-based learning opportunities.

Marketing Management
Marketing Management
This pathway is designed for students interested in working in advertising, communications, public relations, and related fields. Course content covers interpersonal and communication skills in business settings, marketing and management, organizational leadership, advanced strategies for promoting products and services, and key concepts such as segmentation and target marketing, social media and digital marketing, market research and data management, and public relations.

Level 1 Course: Introduction to Business and Marketing
- The course helps students prepare for the growing complexities of the business world by examining basic principles of business, marketing, and finance in addition to exploring key aspects of leadership, ethical and social responsibilities, and careers. Students’ academic skills in communications, mathematics, and economics are reinforced with activities modeled in the context of business topics.
- Aligned Industry Credential: Hootsuite Platform or Marketing Certification. The Hootsuite Platform Certification (HPC) is designed for social media marketing managers and others who want to use Hootsuite as the platform to manage their social media accounts. This certification focuses on teaching individuals how to operate the platform and how to best use the platform to leverage their content.
Level 2 Course: Social Media Marketing Analytics
- Social Media Marketing and Analytics is a study of concepts and principles used in social media marketing. Students will examine the uses, marketing strategies and data generated by social media marketing. Subject matter includes foundational social media knowledge, social media marketing strategies, communication, and ethical responsibilities.

- Marketing and Management II: Advanced Strategies is a study of marketing concepts and principles used in management. Students will examine the challenges, responsibilities, and risks managers face in today's workplace. Subject matter includes finance, business ownership, risk management, marketing information systems, purchasing, promotion, and human resource skills.

The Southwest Airlines Professional Communication Certification focuses on how to communicate effectively in the workplace by addressing topics, including time management, written and verbal communication, listening skills, and effectively managing diversity in the workplace.
